Story

Wrote this in 1971. A chronicle of a near death experience. More of a poem than a lyric. I see vague traces of Dylan Thomas and Hart Crane, both of whom I was reading at the time. I think Rich did an exceptional job of setting it to music. And Dave Wallace did a great job of interpreting the song. Too bad the recording is so awful.

Lyrics

As I Lay Unordained

As I lay unordained

Among the voices of the dead

Within the foreign lamplight

Upon my tousled bed

I saw a dreadful face

And a frozen heart of empty bone

Then all sweetness in the wind

Turned to blackened stone.

And so I climbed that mountain

Beneath the sky of splintered glass

And saw a sinuate corridor

Which led to the plane of death.

I knew my soul would seek

To take that path among the stars

And I felt a birdlike soaring

And I knew it was my heart.

I asked the grisly concierge,

That hideous face and frozen heart,

“Why do you give me sights of death

Which tear my trembling soul apart?”

He smiled, as only death can smile,

But yielded not a word

Then gave me back my swooping life

And set me again on earth.

Lyrics

I'm Back Where I Belong

I'm back where I belong

don't get me wrong

I'll sing you one small song

I'm back where I belong

in your sweet and tender loving arms.

The day is just beginning

we'll sit and yawn

I'll sing you one small song

I'm back where I belong

in your sweet and tender loving arms.

Come sit down beside me

and see the smiles

I'll love you all day long

I'm back where I belong

in your sweet and tender loving arms.

I'm back where I belong

don't get me wrong

I'll sing you one small song

I'm back where I belong

in your sweet and tender loving arms.

The day is just beginning

we'll sit and yawn

I'll sing you one small song

I'm back where I belong

in your sweet and tender loving arms.

I'm back where I belong.

Lyrics

Can You Really Be There?

What are you thinking my love

Behind your frozen glass lenses and underneath your hair

Why am I afraid my love?

Why do I clutch my defenses

As you sit and stare, as you sit and stare, and stare,

Can you really be there?

I’m holding your hand

I’m holding your hand.

I’ve brought you a chair

To use as your throne

And I’m waiting here

For your call and command

For your call and command

And your love

And your love

But you leave me here waiting

What are you thinking my dear

Though I tremble with fear I ask

For I must my dear

For I am afraid

I fear

As I stare into your eyes of glass

That you cannot hear

You sit and stare, and stare, and stare

Can you really be there?

Can you really be there?

Can you really be there?

Can you really be there?

Lyrics

Gravity (I Am Falling)

I was flying high like a sky divers club

A long necked goose or a piper cub

But it took only one look to see

That gravity had its eye on me

Chorus:

I started falling, falling out of the blue,

I started falling, falling for you

And I could see

That you were falling too

I was growing tired of the same hectic pace

The one night stands and the loss of face

Gravity grabbed me and so did you

You were lonely and I was lonely too

Chorus

I fell for you like a ton of bricks

Two tons of lead or of concrete mix

I’m falling, falling, falling through the sky

But I’m so happy that I’m sure that I can fly

I am falling, falling out of the blue,

I am falling, falling for you,

And I can see you that you are falling too

I am falling, falling out of the blue,

I am falling, falling for you,

And I can see you that you are falling too

I am falling, falling out of the blue,

I am falling, falling for you,

And I can see you that you are falling too

I am falling, falling out of the blue,

I am falling, falling for you,

And I can see you that you are falling too

Lyrics

If Martyrs Seek Out Crosses

If martyrs seek out crosses

And ask to be crucified

In order to do their duty

And feel that they’re satisfied

What are you and I to do

Shall we join that martyr fad

Really hit the big time

And make the whole world sad?

If soldiers seek out death

And learn to fight and kill

In order to do their duty

And pay their bills

What are you and I to do

Shall we join that soldier fad

Really hit the big time

And drive the whole world mad?

If some men seek out money

And let it control their lives

In order to do their duty

And do what they think is right

What are you and I to do

Shall we join that money fad

Really hit the big time

And sink with the golden raft?

What are you and I to do

Shall we join that money fad

Really hit the big time

And sink with the golden raft?

Story

Written in 1971. Simple and evocative. Rich and I were trying to write songs for a musical about the land of Telson, a simpler place than the one we were living in. A piece of agrarian nostalgia.

Lyrics

The Festival is Over

The festival is over

We all must now go home

Collect the babies from the beds

Take the children by the hand

And walk home with your loved ones

Beneath the full moon

The festival is over

Every one is going home

The dancing now is over

The footsteps fade away

These things a child won’t forget

The lights and laughing people

Now we welcome a new day

Tomorrow waits for us

The festival is over

Everyone is going home

It’s good to have these times

With your friends and neighbors

Often we’ll remember

All the joy and celebration

After working so very hard

Beneath the hot sun

The festival is over

Everyone is going home

Story

The Rain Song, written in 1971, is another effort meant to fit into the Telson worldview. Works pretty well despite its limitations.

Lyrics

Rain Song

Rain must fall so the crops grow tall for harvest time

Rain must fall so the children grow in God’s design

Rain must fall so the birds will call throughout the spring

Rain must fall so the young can go to plant new seeds

Here comes the rain, here comes the rain,

Coming across the trees to shed her joy on me

I love what she brings she brings new life to this earth

To which we sing “Here comes the rain.”

Oh sweet rain wash my tears away.

Rain must come and work must be done before we eat.

Rain must come and we see the sun before we sleep.

Here comes the rain, here comes the rain,

Coming to wash off the grass, our savior has come at last,

Come to wash away pain and awaken the life

The rain in queen, here comes the rain,

Oh sweet rain wash my tears away.

Rain must fall so the crops grow tall for harvest time

Rain must fall so the children grow in God’s design

Rain must fall so the birds will call throughout the spring

Rain must fall so the young can go to plant new seeds

Here comes the rain, here comes the rain,

Coming to wash off the grass, our savior has come at last,

Come to wash away pain and awaken the life

The rain in queen, here comes the rain,

Oh sweet rain wash my tears away.

Story

I, as a lyricist, am a study in contrasts. And you can study my contrasts here. I can go from sweetness to raunch in a millisecond. As far as I’m concerned it’s all tied up in the same big ball of life. The same big balls? Or the same deep valley from which all living comes? Is this the only Shangri La we’re going to get? What about rosebud?

Lyrics

Broke Down Drunk Blues

Honey, you’ve been playin’ footsie since the night began

Honey, you’ve been playin’ footsie since the night began

Woman, you’ve been tellin’ people that I’m a lot of man

I said I’d make you feel real good but I’m not sure I can

I said I’d make you feel real good but I’m not sure I can

Cuz honey, I’ve drinkin’ whiskey and I’ve been drinkin’ gin

Honey, I’ve drinkin’ whiskey and I’ve been drinkin’ gin

Honey, I’ve been drinkin’ whiskey and mixin’ it with gin

Well, I can pull it out all right I just can’t push it in

Well I can pull it out all right I just can’t push it in

I am working like a sneak thief

In a danger zone

I keep slippin’ honey

Like some slide trombone

I feel just like a snake caught

Underneath a stone

Anything you get tonight

You’ll get on your own

But honey don’t you worry and honey don’t forget

But honey don’t you worry and honey don’t forget

Honey don’t you hurry me and honey don’t forget

I’m doin’ my best to get there. I just haven’t managed yet.

I’m doin’ my best to get there. I just haven’t managed yet.

Cuz I’ve drinkin’ whiskey and I’ve been drinkin’ gin

Honey, I’ve drinkin’ whiskey and I’ve been drinkin’ gin

Honey, I’ve been drinkin’ whiskey and mixin’ it with gin

Well, I can pull it out all right I just can’t push it in

Well I can pull it out all right I just can’t push it in

I am working like a sneak thief

In a danger zone

I keep slippin’ honey

Like some slide trombone

I feel just like a snake caught

Underneath a stone

Anything you get tonight

You’ll get on your own

Lyrics

Holding You Close

My body’s tinder to your flame

My tongue’s a torch around your name

When we touch I see you know

I want you more than I can say

My heart leaps up

Every time I see you

I need you

I want you

I want you to stay

Hey, holding you close

Is what I must do

When holding you close

Is just a moment away

My heart’s on fire, I feel it seethe,

I can’t remember how to breathe

In your hands I am aglow

With light that keeps the night at bay.

My heart leaps up

Every time I see you

I need you

I want you

I want you to stay

Hey, holding you close

Is what I must do

When holding you close

Is just a moment away

Bridge:

You wore bright yellow like the sun

And trembled as your clothing was undone

Then approached me entirely undressed

Like a fiery Phoenix rising from its nest.

You hold my fierce indwelling flame

Your tongues a torch around my name

I feel more than I can show

When you so passionately say…

My heart leaps up

Every time I see you

I need you

I want you

I want you to stay

Hey, holding you close

Is what I must do

When holding you close

Is just a moment away

Lyrics

I’ve Got Nothin’ to Give You

You don’t

You don’t have to tell me

The world’s full of pain

‘cause that much is clear

As I stare at the rain

That whispers so softly

But will not explain

Why my heart is hurting

And the tears will not flow

Chorus:

You don't have to tell me

'cause I've always known

I've got nothing to give you

that you don't already own

You don’t

You don’t have to tell me

The world’s full of grief

And sometimes I pray

That God is a thief

Who’ll steal my heart from me

And give me relief

From my mind that's burning

and the tears that don't flow

Chorus

Bridge:

And living life if easy

that's what you claim

as easy as remembering

your own middle name

You tell me it's easy

but you're telling a lie

if you really believe it

then why do you cry?

And love for you is easy

that's what you say

but your eyes always seem to

give you away

You don’t

You don’t have to tell me

That danger is near

My head’s on the block

Which helps me to hear

A dark wind that’s blowing

Deep into my ear

and my heart is hurting

'cause the tears will not flow

Story

Another of the old ones written in 1971 when Rich and I were first collaborating.

Lyrics

Mary

Who lies beneath the weeping willow tree

Where by war was laid

And who cries there by his lonely side

Where he sips the shade

His name was Country John and Mary was his lover

But he is dead and gone and now she will take no other

Who lonely sits upon the star struck hill

Where by love was put

And who watches Mary by the grave

Where she weeps with hurt

His name is Malcolm Sams he wants Mary for his lover

But John is dead and gone and now she will take no other

Story

Ugh! Circa 1979. This was one of my first attempts to write something baldly commercial in the Country genre. I find the attitude of the male character towards the female revoltingly patronizing.

It might have worked better if the music was more upbeat, less lugubrious.

But, really, nothing could have saved this lyric.

Lyrics

My Heart Is Spoken For

I’m sure you know by now I like your company

I’m certain you like mine because you let your feelings show

But before we get too wasted on this last glass of wine

There’s something that you really ought to know.

Chorus:

You can have my arms tonight

I’ll use them both to hold you tight

But please don’t set your mind on something more

Your heart might get broken

Because my heart is spoken for

I know that this might be a thing you can’t accept

So we had better get this straight before we even start

To do something you’ll regret in the bright light of day

‘cause honey I would hate to break your heart.

Story

Written in 1978. After 36 years I think it still contains a real kernel of truth about a certain type of person. My word choices were a bit precious in places for the character I was portraying.

Lyrics

Nobody Loves Me

Every morning on the street I struggle to get by

But when the evening sun goes down I begin to wonder why

And every night I lie awake wishing I could die

Chorus:

Nobody loves me

I can’t even love myself

Nobody loves me

I can’t even love myself

No one has ever loved me

How am I supposed to love somebody else?

My parents never cared for me and beating me relieved

Their anger at their one way street and the tough breaks they received

I just say excuse me for have been conceived

Chorus

Bridge:

The well-to-do pass me on the street

But our glances never seem to meet

They pretend that I’m not there

They wish that I did not exist

So they leave me to Uncle Sam, the pushers,

And the stray philanthropist

But they know my soul is hungry

my anger could explode

They know my pockets are all empty

And that I can’t be controlled

But they don’t dare look at these realities

Till they’re safe at home watching their TVs.

I had a taste for violence that could not be curbed

I slid my knife into a man you might say he was perturbed

So they put me in a home for the mentally disturbed.

Lyrics

Just Turn ‘Em In

If your friends are social smokers

Should you squeal and jail the jokers

Just turn ‘em in?

Or if your parents drop a tab or two

Do you think it’s really up to you

To turn ‘em in?

Chorus:

Just turn ‘em in

I hear them saying

turn them in

For the common good

Just turn ‘em in

It really scares me

Just ‘cause they say so

Do you think you should?

Now let’s say your neighbor spies

And fills somebody’s ear with lies

And turns you in.

Or say your husband’s full of hate

And he decides to call the state

And turn you in.

Chorus

Bridge:

I don’t deny drugs are causing problems

Now I’ve known my share of the casualties

But I’m afraid that with this charade

We could lose precious liberties.

Do we want a land of snitches

Sniffing ‘round for this years witches

To turn ‘em in?

Should we really want to teach our kids

To inform on others like Nazis did

Just turn ‘em in?

Story

Not a very happy song. Poor guy.

Lyrics

Just Another Weekday Night

You hate yourself

And you hate the work

You think the boss

Is a bone fide jerk

But there’s nothing you can do

To make things right

While you’re waiting for the weekday night,

Waiting for the weekday,

Waiting for the weekday,

While waiting for the weekday night.

Chorus:

You take off your shirt

You take off your shoes

You turn on the TV

To watch the six o’clock news

Someone is there indicting

Somebody sure is fighting

Well, at least it makes

This dull world more exciting.

You drink a beer

And you maybe doze

Wake up to learn

That you missed two good shows

But there’s a reason why

You don’t feel right

'Cause it’s another weekday night,

Just another weekday,

Just another weekday,

It’s just another weekday night.

Chorus

Bridge:

The machinery numbs

Your tired eardrums

You’re only waiting

Sort of hibernating

Until the weekend comes

Until the weekend comes

Lyrics

War Baby Blues

Mama made rifles for the line

Daddy was a bombardier

Mama spread her legs in a victory sign

Then Daddy went off to war

I swam around in Mama’s womb

Daddy gave the Japs what for

I was dropped when he dropped the bomb

And World War Two was over.

I grew up like the others did

And learned what my dad had done

When I asked why he simply said

“You should be glad we won.”

“I’ve come to terms with a sense of guilt

I make a good living too

I drink a beer, you smoke a joint,

What else is there to do?”

                   White Man's Blues

Don't care about your religion

or the color of your skin.

Don't care about your religion

or the color of your skin.

I only wish you'd finish

the things that you begin.

You can use me honey

any old way you choose.

You can use me honey

any old way you choose

'cause the pain I am feeling

is just a WHITE MAN'S BLUES.

JUST WHITE MAN'S BLUES

JUST WHITE MAN'S BLUES

AH IT CAN'T BE TOO BAD

IT'S JUST WHITE MAN'S BLUES

At first I thought that you

would end all my despair.

At first I thought that you

would end all my despair

but this is just one more

neurotic love affair.

And honey you would know

if you stepped into my shoes.

And honey you would know

if you stepped into my shoes

that this pain I am feeling

is just a WHITE MAN'S BLUES.
