Story

This is based on an old lyric. I originally wrote a song called Shadow with Steven Williams in 1981. Most of the elements were there, but I added verses and changed the chorus a bit for the 2010/11 version.

Lyrics

Shadow In the Night

I thought the way to win

Was to lie and take them in

Show them all a plastic face

Then disappear without a trace

Just a phantom, passing through,

The ones I touched, they never knew,

How I yearned to meet their eyes

Took so long to realize…

I’ve played too many games

Forgot the faces and their names

Saw love die and fall apart

Tried to hide my aching heart…

LIKE A RIVER
THAT NEVER FOUND THE SEA,
LIKE A DRIFTER

WHO’S NEVER BROKEN FREE,
TOO LONG I WANDERED

A SHADOW IN THE NIGHT
I NEED YOU TO SEE ME
AS MY SHADOW REACHES
REACHES FOR THE  LIGHT

I know how it feels to fall

Where you can’t find a friend to call

All I built was built on sand,

God, I need a helping hand

Instrumental

It took years, day after day,

To break through and find my way

Took a step but wasn’t sure

Turned around and there you were.

Till the day you believed in me

I didn’t know what love could be

Now I’ve got so much to give

Fin’lly learned I don’t have to live…

Story

I finished the lyric for this one in 1999. I believe Gilbert set it to music in 2007.

But it was a lyric that I played with for a very long time; writing and rejecting version after version.

The core idea came from an overheard conversation in the break room of Farm And Fleet, a farmer oriented retail store where I was working at the time (1975). A woman was reminiscing with a female friend about the "bad boys" she had known and how fondly she remembered them. She was happy with her "nice guy" husband, but she couldn't help "going back in time" every now and then.

Lyrics

                   Mustang Man

V1

I never wanted him for a husband;

I knew I could never hold him if I did

but when he touched me there was lightnin';

I'da crawled from Memphis to Miami for just one kiss.

Chorus:

OH HE WAS A CHARMER,

HE WAS A HARD CASE,

RUNNIN' WILD THE WAY A MUSTANG CAN.

HE WAS SO HANDSOME

IT HURT TO WATCH HIM

BUT HOW I LOVED TO WATCH MY MUSTANG MAN.

V2

Used to love that smilin' crow-black moustache

and those eyes that promised me a brand new world.

Oh, life was new and I was ready

learnin' what it meant to be a grown up girl.

(Chorus)

Instrumental break

Bridge:

And then one morning I heard his Harley;

he didn't even bother to say goodbye.

I won't tell you when that happened

but nothin's ever stopped me goin' back in time.

(Chorus)

Tag: Yes, how I loved to love my Mustang Man

Lyrics

                  Quicksand

V1

It hasn't been an easy life,

I've been through the mill,

ground to a fine grey powder

blown from a sill.

V2

But my spirit keeps on growin'

Though my flesh is dust;

the gold keeps right on glowin'

while the iron turns to rust.

V3

And if there’s a lesson

To learn from the things I've done,

some kind of distillation,

this would be the one...

Chorus:

IF YOU DON'T INTERGRATE

WHAT YOU SAY WITH WHAT YOU DO

THE QUICKSAND THAT YOU CREATE

IS GONNA SWALLOW YOU

QUICKSAND GONNA SWALLOW YOU

QUICKSAND GONNA SWALLOW YOU

QUICKSAND GONNA SWALLOW YOU

QUICKSAND GONNA SWALLOW YOU

Chorus 1 extension:

Quicksand

Don’t be makin’ no quicksand

Don’t be makin’ no quicksand,

Don’t be makin’ no quicksand

No, no, no

          Bridge:

But the truth has many faces

          We’ve not see them all;

          we've gotta make our choices

          maybe take a fall.

What might be right for you

may not be right for me

          but somewhere down the line

I think that we will both agree...

Story

I wrote this lyric in 1991. Only took seventeen years to get it set to music. I consider it one of my best songs.

Lyrics

For Lack Of a Better World

There is silence in the still waters

where lost in the shadows our dreams lie asleep

No one dares ask why they don't waken

because the heart knows the wounds are too deep

FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORLD

people starve in desert heat.

FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORLD

kids buy crack out on the street.

TV slander, corporate lies,

hopeless anger, tortured cries,

a heart falls to defeat

FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORLD

FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORLD

some are condemned at birth.

FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORLD

some think they own the earth.

Crowded prisons, racial hate,

Greenhouse gases, it's too late

cause someone died today

FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORLD

What kind of world is this we're creatin'

where the trust of a child is battered and broken?

What kind of life can we expect

when seeds of compassion are fed with neglect?

FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORLD

we see foes where there should be friends

FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORLD

we're all losers in the end

Look around with open eyes;

it won't take long to realize

it's time to make amends

FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORLD

Story

I wrote the lyric that this lyric is based on in 2000.

Xan, the originator of this song on Kompoz, asked me if I had something that would fit and I sent him that ten year old lyric.

Andrew (BullZephyr), the lead vocalist and lead guitar, mangled what I had. So, because I liked the music so much, I rewrote the lyric to fit.

I think it all works together pretty well.

Lyrics

Far Away

Verse 1:

I remember

When the days were filled with childhood games

Jumpin’ in the puddles

When it rained

Those days are far away

So far away

So far… away.

Chorus1:

I told the earth

I told the sky

Why did you ever say goodbye?

Why did you find your way to the core of me

then leave me alone with this mystery?

Life goes on

and takes its toll

I carried you

in my soul

Chorus2:

I told the earth

then I told the sky

how I yearn for wings

how I want to fly

they both know I want to touch you once more

before I die

Those memories of our yesterdays

warm my heart

remembering how all at once

we felt the passion start

and though our time was all too brief

I still love you

from far away

Far away

So far away

So far…

Lyrics

            Losing Side Of Leaving

Thought I had the losing side of leaving

When you said goodbye

By the time the door was closing

I had nothing left to try

I reached out to touch you

But you just turned away

On the losing side of leaving

What else is left to say?

You said I didn’t measure up

To your dreams of what could be

It didn’t seem to bother you

That you were losing me

I reached out to touch you

But you just turned away

Those on the losing side of leaving

Can’t see the price they pay.

Instrumental break

You said I didn’t measure up

To your dreams of what could be

You didn’t seem to realize

            That you were losing me

You thought that you were winning

When you set me free

But the losing side of leaving

Was in losing loving me.

But the losing side of leaving

Was in losing me.

Lyrics

White Man's Blues

Don't care about your religion

or the color of your skin.

Don't care about your religion

or the color of your skin.

I only wish you'd finish

the things that you begin.

You can use me honey

any old way you choose.

You can use me honey

any old way you choose

'cause the pain I am feeling

is just a WHITE MAN'S BLUES.

JUST WHITE MAN'S BLUES

JUST WHITE MAN'S BLUES

AH IT CAN'T BE TOO BAD

IT'S JUST WHITE MAN'S BLUES

At first I thought that you

would end all my despair.

At first I thought that you

would end all my despair

but this is just one more

neurotic love affair.

And honey you would know

if you stepped into my shoes.

And honey you would know

if you stepped into my shoes

that this pain I am feeling

is just a WHITE MAN'S BLUES.

Lyrics

Ten Million People Waved Goodbye

The whisper of wings across the twilight

Horses hidden in the shadows of the trees

A woman’s voice carries down the canyon

Dark and dreamlike on the scattered breeze

I saw a yellow rose fall into the river

Drifting on the water like a sigh

Saw an image from a dream

Ten million people waved goodbye

The blending of birds into the darkness

Beacons beckon through the swaying cottonwoods

In moonlit air there’s a woman’s laughter

In my heart I know she’s gone for good

I saw a yellow rose fall into the river

Drifting on the water like a sigh

Saw an image from a dream

Ten million people waved goodbye

The Dog And Her Daddy Be Damned (My Baby Loves Me)

V1

Her sisters… don’t like me

the dog.... wants to bite me

It’s true

Her daddy does too

Her mama can’t stand me

She’d like to unman me

But there’s nothing these people can do

Chorus 1:

My baby loves me

can't get enough of me

And when she’s holding my hand

The dog and her daddy be damned

V2

My car… is a beater

My job… barely feeds her

It’s true

That don’t make us blue

Cause there’s beer in the icebox

And I’m talking that hot talk

It’s time for a sweet rendezvous

Story

As best I can recall both the words and the music to this were written in 1979. The recording was done in Santa Barbara, CA in April of 1980 with a Radio Shack Realistic microphone and a cassette deck.

Lyrics

A Part Of Me Will Die

V1

When the sound of what you are

Becomes as silent as a star

Standing in a dark foreboding sky

A part of me will die.

V2

When my arms can’t hold you near

Your eyes and laughter disappear

I’ll have to say my last goodbye

And part of me will die.

Bridge:

I’ll have the mementos and the memories

From all the years I shared with you

But I 'll long for something even more than these.

Will I find it when this stormy night is through?

V3

Maybe when the veiling dark

Falls upon this earthly spark

I’ll find the missing part inside

The part of me that died.

Tryin' To Be A Rock Star

Chorus 1

My dad was trying to be a rock star

My dad was makin’ noise it seemed to me

My dad thought he could be a rock star

That’s when he was thirty-three

V1

He sure loved the Beatles

Listened to the Rolling Stones

I could hear Led Zeppelin

Leakin’ from his headphones

Verse extension:

I was just a toddler then

But I’ve heard those songs again…

And again… and again… and again

Chorus 2:

My dad was trying to be a rock star

My dad was embarrassing me

My dad thought he could be a rock star

He was almost forty-three

V2

He lost his way in the Eighties

He thought the new stuff was crap

He yelled at me ‘bout Country

Wouldn’t even listen to Rap

Verse 2 extension:

I was a kid those days

I thought for sure we’d parted ways…

We wouldn’t talk… for days and days…

Chorus 3:

My dad was trying to be a rock star

My dad seemed crazy to me

My dad was trying to be a rock star

He was almost sixty-three

V3

Then I really heard the Beatles

Caught the fire of the Rolling Stones

Knew what Led Zeppelin meant

‘bout squeezin’ lemons

Verse 3 extension:

And here we are in this funky dive

Provin’ rocknroll is still alive

I’m in my thirties now

And dad is over sixty-five

Chorus 4:

I’m trying to be a rock star

And my dad is helping me

I’m trying to be a rock star

At the age of thirty-three.

Story

I wrote the lyric for this in 2012. Sent it to Richard shortly after.

Autobiographical in a lot of ways. Not the hair, though.

Lyrics

She Loves Me As I Am

Verse:

I was young, I didn't know,

that the flesh is the first to go

then I found that the spirit

carries on, continues to grow,

and now I know...

Chorus:

She loves me as I am

She really does

She loves me as I am

not as I was

She wants me now

it's plain to see

God how I love to know

she's wanting me.

Verse:

I got old, couldn't help it,

gained some weight, lost some hair,

turned away from the mirror

half afraid she wouldn't be there

but she was there...

Chorus:

She loves me as I am

She really does

She loves me as I am

not as I was

She wants me now

it's plain to see

God how I love to know

she's wanting me.

Bridge:

The flesh is weak

doesn't mean the flesh is wrong

but it's always better

when the spirit's strong.

And the spirit is so strong...

Chorus:

She loves me as I am

She really does

She loves me as I am

not as I was

She wants me now

it's plain to see

God how I love to know

she's wanting me.

Story

In 2008 I was making a lot of trips down to Phoenix to buy books for my online used book selling business. I always got a kick out of the sound of "Wikieup and Wickenburg" together. At some point I had the "wings of Phoenix" idea and everything clicked.

The women I lost flew out of Las Vegas, not Phoenix, but Phoenix works better lyrically for several reasons. Same feeling.

I tip my hat to Merle Haggard and his song Silver Wings as well as Gordon Lightfoot and his song In the Early Morning Rain.

Gilbert wrote the music shortly after I'd finished the lyric.

Lyrics

Wings Of Phoenix

‘Tween Phoenix streets and Wickenburg

the goin’ can be slow

especially near the airport

where jets are flying low.

'Tween Wickenburg and Wikieup

there's not too much to see

but I knew the Wings of Phoenix

were flying over me.

The Wings of Phoenix

carried her away

The Wings of Phoenix

carried her away

I watched a red sunset

just fade to grey

The Wings of Phoenix

carried her away

The Kingman lights were comin' out

as I rolled down the hill

wonderin’ what I could have done

to have her with me still

The Wings of Phoenix

carried her away

the life I'd dreamed about

just turned to grey

The Wings of Phoenix

carried her away

The Wings of Phoenix

carried her away

Phoenix wings took all my dreams

and snuffed out every spark

carried her away from me

and left me in the dark

The Wings of Phoenix

carried her away

The Wings of Phoenix

carried her away

through a red sunset

that slowly turned to grey

The Wings of Phoenix

carried her away

The Wings of Phoenix

carried her away

The Wings of Phoenix

carried her away

                   When Blessings Rain Down

When blessings rain down

they'll fall upon my head.

When blessings rain down

they'll fill the riverbed.

When blessings rain down

When blessings rain down

Lyrics

                   Amelia, Where Did You Go?

I love someone who loves machinery

even more than she loves me;

I do the only thing that I can do;

Amelia, I keep calling you.

AMELIA, WHERE DID YOU GO?

Call me soon, I have to know.

Did you try your wings and fly away?

Sweep into the sky and die away?

Call me soon, I'll linger on

till I know where you have gone.

AMELIA, WHERE DID YOU GO?

You must have taken to the air

cause I can't find you anywhere.

AMELIA, WHERE DID YOU GO?

Call me soon, I have to know.

Did you try your wings and fly away?

Sweep into the sky and die away?

Call me soon, I'll linger on

till I know where you have gone.

Story

The first lyric version of this was written back in 1980. It's another one that I wrote and rewrote for years.

I sent what I had at the time to John Bizzack, a songwriter I connected with online in 1998. He came up with a melody that required some lyric adjustment, which I did. Those changes, I believe, made it a better song. Goofy as it is.

Lyrics

The Guinness World Record (For Havin' The Blues)

You used to tell me I'd never amount to nothin' in this life;

I'd be a failure till the end of my days. I was afraid you might be right.

But things sure have changed since you left me that day;

would ya believe now I can say...

I'M KNOWN THE WORLD OVER AND SINCE CREDIT IS DUE

I CAME BY TO TELL YOU ALL ABOUT THE GOOD NEWS.

I'VE GAINED GREAT DISTINCTION AND I'VE NOTHIN' LEFT TO PROVE.

I HOLD THE GUINNESS WORLD RECORD... FOR... HAVIN' THE BLUES.

My heart turned to ashes when I heard that slammin' door;

I still hear the echoes of you tellin' me how I always fell so short.

Now I can thank you for what you've done for me

cause I'm a genuine celebrity.

(Chorus)

In 1903 a man from Milwaukee set the record for all these years;

now I'm in the book and I took his place, yeah, I beat 'im by 96 tears.

Well, my thanks again, I thought you should know

I'm flyin' high since you laid me low.

Lyrics

I Know That Much By Now

V1

Once the many loving words you'd say

could make my trusting heart believe you'd stay

but I should have known that you'd walk away

V2

Though I'd known your kind of love before

I thought that we were sharing something more

but while I was loving you were keeping score

Chorus:

I've been to school

I know that much by now

I'm not a fool.

A heart too close to flame will burn

but I can't help it if I yearn for you

I know that much by now,

I know that much by now.

Once before you changed your point of view

you said you'd make our love forever new

but you never do the things you say you'll do.

                   Nelly Nettle And Cactus Jack

Nelly Nettle lived all alone

high on a mountain near San Antone.

Cactus Jack was a footloose guy

till the day Nelly caught his eye.

When he came callin' that fine day

she gave him a shove;

he grabbed her on his way down

and that's how they fell in love.

CHORUS:

Nelly Nettle and Cactus Jack

what a strange affair

Nelly Nettle and Cactus Jack

what a prickly pair

What a prickly pair they were

she'd sting him and he'd stick her

but they stuck together

like cockleburrs  What a prickly pair.

Fussin' and fightin' through all those years

wouldn't let anyone interfere

and as far as we could see

what they loved was the misery.

And when Nelly passed away

no one saw Jack cry

but before the week was through

Jack laid down and died.

 (CHORUS)

And when Nelly passed away

no one saw Jack cry

but before the week was through

Jack laid down and died.

                        Man From The Mountain

V1:

I'm tossing down these tablets,

screaming at the sky,

"Am I my brother's keeper

or is that some other guy?"

Looking through these lenses

made of flesh and bone;

is there someone in here with me

or am I here all alone?

Chorus:

I'LL ASK THE MAN FROM THE MOUNTAIN

MAYBE HE'LL KNOW SOMETHIN' I DON'T

MAYBE HE'LL GIVE ME SOME ANSWERS

BUT THEN AGAIN MAYBE HE WON'T

V2:

I didn't act quite fast enough

to save my dreams from ruin

just one of the million things

that I didn't get around to doin'.

With this kind of a record

am I still among the blessed?

That's just another question

I wanna get off my chest.

(Chorus)

            Bridge:

I saw the Man From The Mountain

            he already knew my name.

He said, "I know you didn't do it

but you're the one they're gonna blame".

V3:

Just call me Mr. Scapegoat,

hot blood on the altar;

bearing this kind of a burden

I better not falter.

I wish I could discover

just how this thing is done;

are there other lost souls out there

or am I the only one?

THINGS NO MAN HAD GIVEN HER BEFORE

I GAVE HER ALL SHE EVER WANTED

TILL SHE WAS STRONG ENOUGH FOR MORE

V2

Her heart was like an injured sparrow,

that's afraid to trust the healing hand;

took years for her to speak up

longer still for me to understand

that she would see her daddy's shadow

every time I reached out to her.

She heard her daddy saying,

"What you want is more than you deserve".

Chorus 1:

ALL SHE EVER WANTED

WAS TENDERNESS AND GENTLE WORDS

MAYBE THE LUXURY OF SIMPLY BEING HEARD

THINGS NO MAN HAD GIVEN HER BEFORE

I GAVE HER ALL SHE EVER WANTED

TILL SHE WAS STRONG ENOUGH FOR MORE

            Bridge: Time and loving care

                        can heal the sparrow's wing.

                        Time and loving care

                        can heal 'most anything.

Chorus 2:

NOW SHE'S FIN'LLY HAPPY

WITH TENDERNESS AND GENTLE WORDS

MUST BE THE CERTAINTY OF TRULY BEING HEARD

THINGS NO MAN HAD GIVEN HER BEFORE

I GAVE HER ALL SHE EVER WANTED

GLAD NOW I CAN GIVE HER MORE

Story

Written in the early 80s. Steve Williams and I were attending a songwriting class that Alan O'Day was conducting. Alan, as I recall, challenged the class to write a song based on the title "Giving All I Can Give". He said that the "winner" would receive a demo made by him and his friend Artie Wayne. Steve and I won. If I remember correctly we didn't even have a full song, just a verse and chorus. We all met to create the demo at Alan's house. Both Alan and Artie added some parts. It was a great experience.

Alan and Artie, mostly Artie, shopped the demo around, but nothing came of it.

Story

There was a guy in LA who called himself Dr. Demento. He had a weekly radio show on which he played all the demented songs he could find. This was where "Weird Al" Yankovic got his start.

Anyway Dr. Demento held a demented song contest and this was our entry. Didn't win anything. Not sure if it was not demented enough or too demented.

Lyrics

Cannibal

If I could be a cannibal

I'd have enough to eat

eating people sandwiches

and pickled people's feet

If I could be a cannibal

my life would sure be great

because I'd get new clothes

with every meal I ate

Chorus:

I'd like to be a cannibal, be a cannibal,

I'd like to be a cannibal it's true

I'd like to be a cannibal with you

If I could be a cannibal

I'd lose a lot of friends

but when I'm feelin' hungry

who cares how friendship ends?

Chorus

Baby don't be afraid

I'm only kidding you

I wouldn't eat you up

unless you asked me to

If I could be a cannibal

I'd never have to work

I'd have my boss for dinner

and make his wife dessert

Story

The lyrics to this one were originally set to music by Steven Williams in 1980. It was almost used in a new artist project for Columbia Records. Almost, of course, isn't worth diddly. But it was as close to a commercial recording as I ever got.

Lyrics

                   Other Plans

You said your heart

was on the mend

and though you liked me as a friend

love had always been untrue.

But I had OTHER PLANS for you.

I said, "Alright,

I understand

that you won't love me

on command;

I'll do what you want me to

but I have OTHER PLANS for you."

I took my time and played my part

          till my love had healed your heart;

then one day you were so amazed

when love broke through the walls you'd raised.

And when that night

you touched my arm;

I thought it was a

false alarm;

then you smiled and I could see

you had OTHER PLANS for me.

Instrumental break

Then one day you were so amazed

when love broke through the walls you'd raised.

And when that night

you touched my arm;

I thought it was a

false alarm;

then you smiled and I could see

you had OTHER PLANS for me

Then you smiled and I could see

you had OTHER PLANS for me.

Story

I wrote the lyric for this one in 2008. Gilbert set it the same year.

The idea "whiskey is the sweat from the Devil's brow" popped into my head one day. I think it was a couple of years before the lyric was completed. And then the concept of "Mama" being the one to say this made the whole thing come together.

Lyrics

Mama Said Whiskey (Is the Sweat From the Devil’s Brow)

Chorus:

Mama said… Whiskey

Is the sweat from the Devil’s brow

Only brings trouble

Makes you stumble… tumble and fall

Mama said… Whiskey

Is only gonna bring you down

God I hope Mama

Can’t see… can’t see me now.

V1

Thought I’d try a little

Just to ease my pain

Cause I needed something

To help me through the day

But that one little drink

shot to my head

Made me forget

What my Mama said

(Chorus)

V2

Everything she told me

Has all come true

I have stumbled

And I’ve fallen too

I met the Devil

And licked his brow

Lost and alone

So far down

Chorus 2

Mama said… Whiskey

Is the sweat from the Devil’s brow

Only brings trouble

Makes you stumble… tumble and fall

Mama said… Whiskey

It’s only bring you down

God I hope Mama

Can’t see… can’t see me now.

Story

Total depression. Maybe some of you can relate.

I wrote the first version of this in Nashville, TN, in 1986. Melba Westmoreland wrote music for those lyrics, but I don't think there was ever a recording.

I don't have a record of when I settled on this version, 2011 or 2012 I think.

Lyrics

Every Shade Of Blue

V1

I turn to my pillow then turn to the wall

My whole world has now shrunken to this empty scene

When I felt your touch I felt my whole world change

But now all that’s left is what should have been.

Chorus:

Shades of blue

keep closin’ in

Shades of blue

dark shadows fall

You left me and so my heart’s turning

Every shade of blue

V2

Blue eyes haunt the silence that you left behind

I’m wrapped up in your blanket, I can’t face the day,

I pulled down the shades but their blue light's on me

As I dream of the love that’s a blue moon away.

Bridge

So many ways to feel the same feeling

So many ways a heart breaks in two

So many dreams have dwindled to nothing

So many shades of blue

(Chorus)

Lyrics

 You Don't Know Boys

Verse 1:

My dad was a young man once

so I guess he'd know

how many hearts get lost

in the afterglow

Now I'm all grown up

but I'm still his sugar and spice,

man, does he get nervous

when the boys look at me twice (he says)

Chorus 1:

You don't know boys the way I do

They'll take your heart for a ride

With a twinkle in their eyes

Steal your love by surprise

It could happen to you

You don't know boys the way I do

Verse 2:

He knows I'm a nice girl now

pure and poised

but he's afraid my dreams

are filled with bad bad boys

Mama tried to tell him

I'm smart enough to choose

but every time I date

I hear the same old news (he says)

Repeat Chorus 1

Bridge:

My daddy's words ring in my head

but I remember what my Mama said (she said)

Chorus 2:

You don't know your dad the way I do

He took my heart for a ride

With a twinkle in his eye

Stole my love by surprise

It could happen to you

You don't know your dad the way I do
